Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO), jointly with Mitsui Bussan Plant & Project Corporation, has been awarded a contract to construct a 150,000 t/y aniline plant at the Nanyo Complex of Tosoh Corporation (Tosoh). The plant, consisting of production units for nitric acid, nitrobenzene, and aniline, is to supply aniline, which is the major feedstock for MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate), to the Nanyo Plant of Nippon Polyurethane Industry Co., Ltd., an affiliate of Tosoh, which has the largest MDI production capacity in Asia. The plant is located adjacent to Tosoh's Nanyo Complex and uses MDI to produce rigid polyurethane foam. This aniline project is a major step to enhance Tosoh's competitiveness in Vinyl -Isocyanate Chain Operations.

TOYO's scope of supply covers overall project management for this project and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for the nitrobenzene unit as well as the offsite facilities, while JFE Engineering Corporation handles EPC (including licensing) of the nitric acid unit and Chisso Engineering Co., Ltd. is responsible for the EPC of the aniline unit. The plant is scheduled to be completed in March 2005.

Tosoh's Vinyl-Isocyanate Chain Operations

The combination of Tosoh's Vinyl Chain operations, which produces VCM and PVC through EDC from Chlorine produced by Tosoh's Chlor-alkali plants, the largest in Asia, with Nippon Polyurethane Industry's isocyanate (material for urethane) operations delivers superior economic rationality through effective utilization of chlorine. Integrated management of the two operations is referred to as the Vinyl-Isocyanate Chain Operations, which is Tosoh's core business.
