Chiyoda Corporation and Toyo Engineering Corporation won the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism prize in the “JAPAN Project International Award,” for the Sakhalin LNG Plant Project for Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. (SEIC).

This prize is awarded to overseas projects for engineering, construction, or real-estate development carried out by Japanese companies, to applaud their contribution to the enhancement of Japanese companies’ international presence.
Together with our project partners, we were commended in the award ceremony held in March 9, 2009.

The award-winning project was implemented to construct a large-scale LNG plant with an annual capacity of 9.6 million tons and an oil export terminal. These plant and terminal constitute the core facilities of the Sakhalin II project developed by SEIC in the region of Prigorodnoye in the southern part of Sakhalin Oblast of Russia. SEIC is a consortium comprising Royal Dutch Shell plc (Netherlands), OAO Gazprom (Russia), Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Japan), and Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan).
In February 18, 2009, a grand ceremony to celebrate the completion of the project was hosted by SEIC in Sakhalin, with attendance of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso.

The natural gas used for LNG production is transported by pipeline from the gas fields in the northern part of Sakhalin Oblast. After being liquefied at this plant, it is shipped by LNG vessels to Japan and other countries in East Asia. The LNG produced at the plant is supplied to major electric power companies and gas companies in Japan under long-term supply agreements with SEIC.
In this way, the Sakhalin II project plays a significant role to contribute to Japanese national energy strategies for the diversification of sources of supply. For the execution of the project, a loan from Japan Finance Corporation (Japan Bank for International Cooperation) is used, and other Japanese companies have participated as contractors for construction and logistics services.
