Polycarbonate (PC)

Summary

Polycarbonate (PC) is used in a variety of fields as a representative engineering plastic material that exhibits superior physical properties such as heat resistance, impact resistance, structural stability and optical transparency. Applications of the PC can be found in electronic components, data storage (CDs and DVDs), automobiles, mobile phones, medical products, construction materials (Helmet & Goggle), etc. TOYO has a lot of experience with the ASAHI KASEI’s Polycarbonate production process (AKC Process) offered by ASAHI KASEI Corporation. AKC Process that is the non-phosgene method starting from EO & CO2 has excellent features such as environment-friendly.

Features

The phosgene-free process for the production of Polycarbonate using ethylene oxide, carbon dioxide and bisphenol A as raw materials, which is characterized by using carbon dioxide as the carbonylation agent, and by using melt polymerization method which eliminates the use of a solvent such as methylene chloride. The key polymerization is accomplished by following reaction.

AKC Process consists of the following four production units, three monomer production units and one polymerization unit. The overall steps of this process are shown as follow;

EC : Ethylene Carbonate, DMC : Dimethyl Carbonate, PH : Phenol, ME : Methanol, DPC : Diphenyl Carbonate
